ABOUT LEORNIAN WINES

English and Welsh wines are in such an interesting place right now - not being subject to strict rules around viticulture and winemaking, there is the chance to really explore what’s possible in this nascent winemaking country.

Leornian Wines was created to make wines from the UK beyond the traditional method sparkling wines we are rightly gaining a world-renowned reputation for. Having planted Dunesforde Vineyard in North Yorkshire with my family, I knew that there was bags of potential all around the country, not just on the south coast of England.

As I’m not tied to a vineyard there is the flexibility each year to use different grapes from new places to make varied and interesting wines. My approach in the cellar is simple: do as little as possible! As a winemaker, I don’t want to interfere if I don’t have to - the less intervention in the cellar, the more honest the wines will be to the grapes and the places they were grown.

As a very small producer, I know my impact will always be small, but it’s important to me that every aspect of the finished product is carefully considered and sourced responsibly. That’s why I’m only using natural cork, which comes from renewable sources and can be composted, and why there’s only one label on the bottle rather than two or three. It’s also why the paper for the label has 15% grape waste product in it, and why the box is plain brown cardboard made from at least 90% recycled fibres and is 100% recyclable.
