Chardonnay 2024
Clayhill Vineyard, Essex
£22.00
The second Essex Chardonnay I've made under Leornian Wines, this time from the 2024 vintage. The 2023 got a Silver at the WineGB Awards, while this one got a Gold!
Made again from Chardonnay grown at Clayhill, in the Crouch Valley in Essex - the place to grow excellent fruit for still wines here in England. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed on the day they were picked, cold-settled and then two-thirds was moved to a ceramic 'barrel' for fermentation, with the remaining third fermented in an old oak barrel. The wine in ceramic was left to age for 10 months before being blended with the other barrel-fermented component. The whole blend was then put back to old oak barrels for a further 12 months. The finished wine was bottled by hand, with no fining or filtration. 879 bottles produced.
This Chardonnay has a fresh and bright nose, with citrus and stone fruits. It’s fresh and zesty on the palate with great acidity, texture and a super long finish. While it has spent time in oak, this barely comes across on tasting, and is more comparable to an un-oaked Chablis, than a heavily oaked Chardonnay.
Available above individually or in cases of 6.
